The Kulturspeicher Würzburg ventures on the exhibition Liebe. Love. PAARE with the motive of the couple in twentieth century art. Where else but here in Würzburg should this topic be entitled where Tilman Riemenschneider´s Adam und Eve are at home. This exhibition shows the couple in alternating forms: erotically merged in love, strapped into daily life, extended to a family, but also dissociated from each other and over formed by media images.

Couples in Art

In art and its symbolism of love the motive of the couple looks back to an old tradition of illustrations. By the nineteenth century couple illustrations had released themselves from mythological and Christian contexts and they achieved new attention. However, also their dark sides got with Edvard Munch into the focus: erotic attraction and rejection, loneliness together, jealousy and the anticipation that woman and man cannot find each other eventually. The cooperation of genders is a topic of interest for art after 1945. In those years commercial images of the media and their ideals of beauty were being established and have formed our ideas of love and relationships as well as their reflex in art.
